To the editor: I am writing regarding David Lapp's article, "Return
to the Jungle" (May 1990, Multinational Monitor). The Meat Inspection law
requires that countries that import do have a system which assures both
wholesomeness and freedom from microbiological contamination. If Canada
does not have that system, I am not aware of it. However, I have asked
the Department of Agriculture to give me their assessment in this regard.
Also, we should not be depending upon inspections at the borders because
they would not be sufficient to determine whether [the meat] had been handled
in a wholesome manner at the packing house and in route. Sincerely, Neil
